About the comics

What is Science Adventures?

Science Adventures is a science comic magazine for children aged 6 to 12, published in three series: Connect for ages 6–8, Digest for ages 8–12, and Plus — our refreshed series for ages 8–12, redesigned from Volume 12 with bigger format and updated science topics. Every issue is packed with proper science — space, nature, energy, biology, chemistry, physics — told through vivid comic stories and characters. Not a worksheet. Not a textbook with pictures. A comic, with science built into every story.

Why comics and not a regular science magazine?

A question that often comes from the parents of children now reading at the dinner table when they’re supposed to be having pudding.

The story format means children encounter science through plot, character, and consequence — they understand what photosynthesis does because they watch a character figure it out, not because they read a definition. It also means children who “aren’t readers” often become readers. Because they don’t realise they’re reading. They think they’re following a story.

Is this good for children who don’t like reading?

Honestly — it’s where Science Adventures tends to work best.

Children who say they don’t like reading usually mean they haven’t found the right thing yet. The comic format means there’s always something to look at — and before they realise it, they’re reading. The story pulls them in. The science keeps them there. We hear from parents every week whose children “don’t read” who are now on their third issue.

What’s the difference between Connect, Digest, and Plus?

Connect is for children aged 6 to 8. Lively stories, bigger illustrations, hands-on experiments — a natural first step into science reading.

Digest is for children aged 8 to 12. Longer stories, more complex science, bigger ideas — still told through the comic format that makes it a read your child chooses, not one you push them towards.

Plus is our refreshed series — same 8 to 12 age range as Digest, in our biggest 84-page format. We redesigned the format from Volume 12 onwards and updated the topics to reflect what curious kids are asking about now — climate, AI, biotech, and beyond. New issues still being added.

Not sure which fits? Our Connect Taster Pack and Digest Taster Pack are both three back issues for £16. Most families know by the end of the first issue.

What’s inside a typical issue?

Each issue includes multiple science stories, experiments and activities to try at home, fact features, puzzles, and science news. Topics rotate across space, nature, energy, biology, chemistry, physics, and technology — no two issues cover the same ground. Many children re-read their back issues. There’s always something new to notice the second time around.

Are older back issues still worth reading?

Yes. The science in back issues covers timeless principles — how energy works, why cells divide, what makes a star expand — and it doesn’t date. Each issue stands alone as a complete experience. For curious children, there’s no such thing as “already done that science.”

Content and quality

Is the content curriculum-aligned?

Yes. The content covers the core themes of the UK science curriculum — including energy, diversity, materials, forces, and the environment — and then goes a bit further. Because curious children usually do.

Are the experiments safe for children to do at home?

Yes. All experiments are designed for children to carry out at home without specialist equipment. Most use everyday items from a kitchen or stationery drawer. We flag clearly any step where an adult should stay close. The goal is that children can lead their own experiments from start to finish — and feel genuinely proud when they do.

Is there advertising in the comics?

No. Not one advert, not one sponsored section, not one advertorial dressed up as editorial. Every page is content. Every page is science.

Do the issues come with a free gift?

They don’t. We made a deliberate choice not to include cover gifts. A child’s attention is worth more than a plastic toy lost by lunchtime — and the pages inside are already the gift. No tat, no gimmicks, just the good stuff.

Getting started

Do I need to subscribe?

No. You can buy a Taster Pack (three issues for £16), a Connect or Digest Box Set (ten issues for £59), or the Plus Box Set (ten issues for £69). No subscription, no rolling commitment, no auto-renewals. You choose what works for your family, and you’re never locked in.

What is the Taster Pack?

The Taster Pack is three back issues of either Connect or Digest for £16, including free UK delivery. It’s the right way to find out whether Science Adventures is a fit for your child — without committing to a full box. Most families know by the end of the first issue. If your child reads all three in a single weekend, that’s your answer.
